In honor of #HeadStartAwarnessMonth, Carlos Romero's mother talks about her son's experience with Astor. "Head Start helped mold my son, Carlos, into the brilliant young man he is today. Starting off in the Early Head Start Infant Room, Carlos began to progress. I could see it through his work, not only at school but at home. Carlos didn’t just learn about colors, shapes, and numbers – he also learned social skills that helped him explore learning more. The Head Start Program helped Carlos to think problems through and problem solve by himself or using the resources around him. The problem-solving skills Carlos learned throughout these years are the skills that helped him get into Odyssey of the Mind (a middle school science group that competes with other schools). There, he went on to complete and use his problem-solving skills with others. While Carlos was in Odyssey of the Mind, the Dover School District won second place in the competition!"Learn more about Astor's Head Start Program. (631) 312-3853 ... 510-953-3634

In honor of #HeadStartAwarenessMonth, Melissa Robinson, a former Head Start student, talks about her experience with Astor: "Astor has been a part of my life longer than I can remember. I attended Head Start as a child and so did my son. When I first brought my son to Astor, I received a warm welcome from the staff. But what really touched my heart was when the center director and receptionist remembered me from my time at Head Start years earlier. As a parent, I spent a lot of time volunteering at Astor. I was encouraged to apply for a substitute teaching position. The support I received lead me to apply for a more permanent part-time position while I attended college. Astor was a safe home for my son, while I worked on bettering myself. Through hard work, support and constant encouragement, I was able to graduate from college and join Astor as a teacher." ...
